Peyman Haghirian Scholarship
For Outstanding Graduate Students of Hanga (Japanese Print Art)
at the Tokyo University of the Arts, Graduate School of Fine Arts – Printmaking Department (Hanga Kenkyushitsu)
The Peyman Haghirian Scholarship, established by the Haghirian Art Foundation, supports the international exposure and artistic development of promising young Japanese printmakers. The scholarship is awarded annually to a outstanding student who is in the 1st year of the Master-program in the Printmaking Department (Hanga Kenkyushitsu) at Tokyo University of the Arts (Geidai), recognizing excellence and potential among emerging talents and will be awarded by the Jury of the Tawara Award competition.
Scholarship Details

Residency in Austria: The selected student will be invited to spend up to two months in Graz, Austria, at the artist residence of the Haghirian Art Foundation.

Travel Expenses: Round-trip airfare between Tokyo and Graz will be fully covered by the foundation.

Local Support: The scholarship includes assistance in Graz, including orientation, local connections, and guidance to help the student engage with the local art scene and cultural institutions.

The student’s work and residency will be promoted through the Foundation’s channels, helping to raise their international profile.

Selection Process: The scholarship recipient will be chosen by the faculty members of the Printmaking Department at Geidai, based on academic and artistic merit.
Goals and Mission
This scholarship aims to foster cross-cultural exchange, offer international exposure, and provide a stimulating environment for young Japanese artists working in traditional and contemporary printmaking. The opportunity to live and work abroad helps emerging artists gain new perspectives, broaden their artistic practice, and build an international network.
Additional Considerations

Open to students who have completed or are completing the first year of the Master’s program in Hanga at Geidai.

During their stay, the student are encouraged to create new work, give an artist talk or presentation, or participate in a small local exhibition, depending on the timing and opportunity.

Alumni Network: Recipients may be invited to join the alumni network of Haghirian Art Foundation artists, contributing to a growing community of past scholars and collaborators.
